Beautiful and dynamic!
Expressing the joy of bicycling with your whole body

During the bicycle trial competition the body and bicycle fuse, to overcome the large rock or tree in front of you. Combining his acrobatic performance, bicycle handling skills, and mental toughness to tackle any obstacle, professional rider Tomu Shiozaki is one of the best in the world.
I was 10 years old when I encountered a trial bike; it had no saddle, small gears, and had a completely different shape than a typical bicycle.
He immediately fell in love with the sense of unity and fun he felt with the bike when clearing difficult obstacles. After graduating from high school, he  went to Europe, and in 2018 he climbed to the 7th position on the world ranking.
"Trial is just fun in that there's not just one answer! And, the game is the place where you can express your skills in a beautiful and dynamic way. The appeal of this sport is the process of thoroughly examining your own movements, practicing, and refining your skills. Aiming for a fluid and supple riding style. Aiming for a fluid and supple riding style, I try making the best possible movement depending on my physical and mental conditions and the grip of obstacles," he says, describing the depth of the sport.
Shiozaki explains he usually uses the practice area at home, but for extended practice, he goes to the area around Mt. Meshimoriyama to make use of the rocks and natural terrain. "The slopes, gravel roads, mountains, forests, and the whole terrain of Yatsugatake are all a part of me. I love this place, where I was born and raised. Where ever I go, even compared to the mountains in Europe, I don't think there is any place more beautiful and wonderful than Yatsugatake. And whether it's cyclocross, BMX or road biking, the terrain in Yamanashi is great for cycling and is an excellent place for people who enjoy cycling," he says.
In addition to competing in world-class competitions, he also travels around the country as an instructor to promote the sport of trial riding.
"A good rider is one who has a wide range of skills and applications, put in all the time and effort he/she can, and who has grown as a human being.
I want to demonstrate to them, not only the technical skills but also focus on the part which becomes the model for their actions. This means the way to think and feel, and what is important as a human being through cycling," he expresses strongly.
The trial bike competition has been selected as an Olympic candidate at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Shiozaki is hoping that if it is selected as an Olympic sport, it will raise awareness of the sport.

"It's a minor sport with a high level of difficulty, but I want to expand the base of the sport through workshops and other events around the country. I'd like to prepare bikes for children to give them hands-on experience if they want to after watching the performances," he says enthusiastically.
"Needless to say, I'm going to show good results myself too. My goal is to be the best in the world! I don't think it's impossible, so I'll work hard to reach the top of the world," said Shiozaki with a smile. He will undoubtedly continue wowing the audience with his spectacular skills.
